Dont just hand this game to Georgia. Some pundits want to do that, but No. 6 Georgia (2-0) and coach Mark Richt know better heading into a SEC East Division showdown against No. 24 South Carolina (1-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The last two visits to Columbia havent gone so well. In 2010, the Gamecocks beat the Bulldogs 17-6. In 2012, South Carolina routed Georgia 35-7.MORE: | | Its only the third week of the season, but this game has major implications for the conference and college football playoff. Since 2005, the nine matchups are separated by four points and 72 total yards.Lets look at the Numbers that Matter:The seriesGeorgia owns a commanding 46-17-2 lead in the all-time series. This marks just the ninth meeting between the two schools when Russell Wilson Jersey both are ranked. The Gamecocks have a 5-3 advantage in those previous eight meetings:2013: No. 11 Georgia 41, No. 6 South Carolina 302012: No. 6 South Carolina 35, No. 5 Georgia 72010: No. 24 South Carolina 17, No. 22 Georgia 62003: No. 8 Georgia 31, No. 25 South Carolina 72001: No. 21 South Carolina 14, No. 25 Georgia 91988: No. 14 South Carolina 23, No. 6 Georgia 101980: No. 4 Georgia 13, No. 14 South Carolina 101959: No. 16 South Carolina 30, No. 13 Georgia 14MORE: Signature Game: No. 6 South Carolina 35, No. 5 Georgia 7 (2012)In the only matchup where both teams are in the Top 10, South Carolina blitzes Georgia with 21 points in the first quarter at Williams-Brice Stadium. Ace Sanders 70-yard punt return for a touchdown opened up the blowout.Signature Game: No. 4 Georgia 13, No. 14 South Carolina (1980)This nationally-televised game pitted freshman Herschel Walker against senior George Rogers in a battle of superstar backs, and Walkers 76-yard touchdown gave the Ariel Jurado Jersey Bulldogs the win. Rogers won the Heisman Trophy, but the Bulldogs won the AP national championship. The Head Ball Coach factorIs Steve Spurrier the most hated coach in Georgia? The Head Ball Coach is 15-6 all-time against Georgia, and that includes a 4-5 record at South Carolina. Mark Richt, meanwhile, is 8-5 against the Gamecocks.MORE: Containing Todd Gurley will be a tall order for South Carolina. (Getty Images)Spotlight Player: Todd Gurley, RB, GeorgiaSouth Carolina figures to see a load of another Georgia Heisman hopeful this time around. Gurley had 30 carries for 132 yards in the last meeting. Gurley averaged 13.2 yards per carry and scored four total TDs in Georgias opener and has a chance to make another statement in front of a national audience. The other Gurley in this game, South Carolina strong safety T.J. Gurley, figures to be busy.MORE: | | Heisman leaders, Week 2Spotlight Player: Mike Davis, RB, South CarolinaThe Gamecocks have a heavyweight back in Davis, who had 149 yards in last years meeting against the Bulldogs. South Carolina has totaled more than 200 yards rushing in the last three meetings against Georgia, and the Ryan Rua Jersey 216-pound running back needs to match and perhaps outproduce Gurley. On the spot: Dylan Thompson, QB, South CarolinaThompsons first two starts have taken an up-and-down narrative. Thompson averages 316 pa sing yards per game, but he also has a 57.7 completion percentage. Thompson, however, is 16-of-22 pa sing when the Gamecocks have the lead. If South Carolina jumps ahead early, then Thompson is set up for succe s.Key matchup: South Carolina WRs vs. Georgia CBsThe equalizer for the Gamecocks is the deep ball. South Carolina has five different receivers that have caught pa ses of 25 yards or more, including Nick Jones (15.7 yards per catch) and Shaq Roland (12.0 yards per catch). Thompson likely will dial a few deep shots early, so Georgia cornerbacks Damian Swann and Devin Bowman better be ready.MORE: | Photos: | Best of Week 2Did you know?Dont put too much pre sure on Georgia Kyle Bird Jersey quarterback Hutson Mason. Consider the numbers of the Bulldogs last four quarterbacks in their first start against South Carolina:2010: Aaron Murray (14-of-21, 192 yards)2009: Joe Cox (17-of-24, 201 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT)2006: Matthew Stafford (9-of-19, 171 yards, 3 INTs)2005: D.J. Shockley (8-of-17, 112 yards, 2 INTs)The numbers arent pretty, but Georgia went 3-1 in those games, the only lo s coming in 2010.In-game trend: First-down carriesIn last years meeting, 20 of Gurleys 30 carries came on first down. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry on those first-down carries. If Gurley has that kind of succe s again, the Gamecocks are in serious trouble.Magic Number: 4.0In the last nine meetings, Georgia averages 4.3 yards per carry in wins against South Carolina and just 3.8 yards per carry in lo ses. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, average 4.6 yards per carry in wins; 3.4 in lo ses. The team that cracks 4.0 yards per carry wins.Bottom LineGeorgia can expect South Carolinas best shot, especially at Williams-Brice Stadium. Mike Davis has a chance to outshine Georgias impre sive stable of running backs, and he might need 25 Alex Claudio Jersey -to-30 carries to keep the Bulldogs off the field. A one-score game seems in order, and Georgia escapes with it.
